Whether we're ready for it or not, another new year is upon us. Each year we are flooded with "new year, new me" campaigns and while the thought of starting new routines can seem daunting, it doesn't have to. By setting some time aside to simply creating a vision for what you want can be a powerful exercise and set you up for success for the days, weeks and months ahead.
The beginning of a new year (or week or month) is an ideal time to do this. By taking time to reflect on the past, intentionally moving forward, and creating new visions of what you want to accomplish will create an intentional vibration in the universe—hello Law of Attraction. This belief is that positive or negative thoughts bring positive or negative experiences into your life. Creative visualization using affirmations and intentions is a powerful combination believed to bring opportunities by using energy that already exists in the universe around us. Using this energy, along with a vision board will materialize your goals into reality.
Why create a vision board?
A vision board not only gives you inspiration that looks amazing but it also helps you visualize your best life! But to break it down even further, here are some of our favorite reasons to create vision boards:
Useful in identifying your vision
Helps give you clarity on what you want
Reinforces your affirmations
Keeps you focused on your intentions
Map out your goals in a fun and motivating way
Allows what you focus on to expand
What is a vision board?
A vision board is a physical collection of items such as pictures, magazine clippings, words, and quotes that visually affirm your goals and dreams. Think of it as a visualization tool of your biggest goals, dreams and desires.
Each vision board is unique to the individual. You want to try to use elements that mean something personal to you such as photographs, favorite quotes, or a personal mantra. Try to tap into your inner creativity by using different colors and textures by cutting images and words out of magazines, adding design elements with stickers or whatever items you would like to. There is no right or wrong with how you want to create your vision board!
Why is a vision board important?
Understanding how a vision board works is a game-changer for your entire life. The power of visualization works so well because you're harnessing the power to create the life you want. And it's more than just placing some words and images onto a board to "manifest" what you want or using the "law of attraction".
When you constantly are seeing images of your vision, it helps your brain filter out the stuff you don't want (and the negative stuff that isn't important to you) and instead, focus on what you do want. Seeing this constant, visual reminder is how your subconscious remains focused on your goals.
When you create one and place it somewhere you look regularly throughout the day, you'll end up doing short visualizations about what you want without even realizing that you're doing it. And, what you focus on is what expands. Your vision board is a way to see your goals and develop a mindset to reach them each and every single day.
How to create a vision board?
The process of creating your vision board should be organic and what feels right to you. Remember, there is no right or wrong! Your goals should include what motivates you, have intent, inspire you, and help you find clarity. Here are 7 areas you might choose from to focus on (choose as many or as few as you would like):
Physical—exercising, eating better
Emotional —daily gratitude, happiness, joy
Intellectual—reading, creating, listening to a podcast
Spiritual—find a sense of connection larger than yourself
Environmental—eliminating trash and waste
Social—connecting with family or friends
Occupational—remembering to disconnect from work
Step 1: Do Some Visualization
Take as much time as you need to do this! Make sure you feel calm and clear and be sure to remove any distractions. Ask yourself the following questions and write down whatever comes to mind. If a question doesn't resonate with you, that's ok! Skip over it. There may be additional questions that may not be listed you want to include.
What do I want my life to look like?
What do I want my home to look like?
What do I want my food and nutrition to look like?
What do I want to do MORE of in my life?
What physical things do I want to bring into my life?
How do I want to FEEL every day?
What words, phrases or quotes make me feel good?
What financial and career goals do I want to meet in the next year?
What major purchases do I want to save for?
What is my dream travel destination in the next year?
Step 2: Gather Your Supplies
The first rule? There are no rules! It should be a fun activity that allows you to bring a playful, creative and unique vibe to your goals. Create it in a way that makes you feel happy, motivated and inspired. It should be a representation of what you want your life to look like.
You can use any supplies you'd like (magazines, photographs, inspirational quotes, affirmations, embellishments, stickers, crafting supplies, markers, etc.). You'll also want a board or something to put all of your items on.
Step 3: Create Your Vision Board
Once you've completed your visualization and gathered your supplies, you're ready! Here are some tips to creating your vision board:
Set the mood—no TV, relaxing music, light a candle, pour a glass of wine
Experiment with the layout—before gluing and placing items, lay everything out and make sure you're happy with it before pinning your items down
Create the final board—using glue sticks or whatever else you have, start placing your items
Last but not least (and actually the most important step), go hang your vision board! Remember to place it somewhere you can see each day.
